California Visual & Performing Arts Content Standards
View and download the content standards in dance, music, theatre and/or visual arts, developed for each grade level. These standards were adopted by the California State Board of Education on January 10, 2001.

National Standards for Arts Education
Developed by the Consortium of National Arts Education Associations (under the guidance of the National Committee for Standards in the Arts), the National Standards for Arts Education is a document which outlines basic arts learning outcomes integral to the comprehensive K-12 education of every American student.

CDEA - California Dance Educators Association
The CDEA Website features: a job network for dance positions; a membership directory; information on statewide conferences; information on local and regional workshops; information on grants, scholarships and career opportunites.
 
NDEO - National Dance Education Organization
The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) advances dance education centered in the arts. As a non-profit organization, NDEO is dedicated to promoting standards of excellence in dance education through the development of quality education in the art of dance through professional development, service and leadership. They hold public discussions, sponsor institutes, workshops, conferences and programs. Click on National Programs to view information on the programs that NDEO carries out across the United States.
 
TCAP - The California Arts Project
The California Arts Project (TCAP) is the state's subject matter project in Visual and Performing Arts. TCAP's central mission is to deepen teachers' knowledge of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, and to enhance instructional strategies for teaching these four disciplines to California's students, pre-kindergarten through post-secondary. This site hosts interesting features such as arts education research and a standards data base.
 
Actors Equity
Actors' Equity Association is the labor union representing over 40,000 American actors and stage managers working in the professional theatre. The site provides information for union members, news, (casting notices) events, links to related sites and membership services. Within the Actor's Equity web page a wonderful career resource is the "Casting Call² section. Although primarily for the Equity actor the section provides job openings for Actors and Stage Managers. Here students can obtain current information about job openings in their area or anywhere in the country. Search categories include "types of notice" includes Equity Principal, Equity Chorus, non-required Principal, non-required chorus, or stage manager. Other categories include "state" or "by contract" This is a good primer for the actor looking for job opportunities.
 
Aesthetics On-line
This is the web site for the American Society of Aesthetics. Members are interested in aesthetics, philosophy of art, art theory and art criticism. The organization sponsors conferences, publish a journal and newsletter, and sponsors mailing lists and member web pages. Visitors to the site will find the links under "Ideas" of special interest.
 
AEP - Arts Education Partnership
ARTS EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP on the World Wide Web provides a comprehensive listing of advocacy tools in print, on video and online with links to websites for obtaining resources from Partnership organizations. This includes information provided by the National Endowment for the Arts which assists non-profit organizations in identifying potential federal support for cultural programs and local access points for that support. Partners are listed in the annual Directory and partnering organizations include arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that have national scope and impact. This site is a resource for all those who need to make a case for strong arts education.
 
CAC - California Arts Council
The mission of the CAC is to make available and accessible quality art reflecting all of California's diverse cultures; to support the state's broad economic, educational, and social goals through the arts; to provide leadership for all levels of the arts community; and to present effective programs that add a further dimension to our cities, our schools, our jobs, and our creative spirit. You will find current information about educational grants programs on this web site.
 
CALAA - California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies
The California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies (CALAA) is a non-profit, membership organization representing the state's 250 local arts agencies. CALAA defines local arts agencies as community organizations (private), or agencies of local government (public) which provide services, financial support, or other programs for a variety of arts organizations and/or individual artists, and the community as a whole. You will find links to local arts agencies on this site.
 
Community Arts Network
The Community Arts Network (CAN) project promotes information exchange, research and critical dialogue within the field of community-based arts, that is, art made as a voice and a force within a specific community of place, spirit or tradition. The CAN project is designed and managed by a partnership of Art in the Public Interest, a national nonprofit organization, and The Virginia Tech Department of Theatre Arts' Consortium for the Study of Theatre and Community. Click on Conversations to access forums/discussion board where you ask questions, discuss issues, and reflect on what you read on the CAN web site. APInews is the organization¹s regular newsletter on current events, and the Reading Room contains essays and links focusing on Community-based Arts.
 
Congress on Research in Dance
The Congress On Research in Dance is a not-for-profit, interdisciplinary organization with an open, international membership. Its purposes are: to encourage research in all aspects of dance, to foster the exchange of ideas, resources, and methodology, through publication, international and regional conferences, and workshops and to promote the accessibility of research materials. Membership information is available on line. The web site also contains information on conferences, publications, awards and honors, and links to other Dance service Organizations on the web.
 
Dance Notation Bureau
The Dance Notation Bureau's (DNB) mission is to advance the art of dance through the use of a system of notation. DNB does this by creating dance scores using the symbol system called Labanotation. This allows the dances to continue to be performed long after the lifetime of the artist. The Dance Notation Bureau is constantly adding new, revised, and transcribed scores to its collection. The Dance Notation Bureau Library maintains a collection of original Labanotated dance scores. Along with the DNB-produced scores, the Library collects and houses other materials needed to stage the dances. The site has a search feature and many documents are available in pdf format.
 
Dance USA
The web site for Dance USA provides information about this national organization's activities. The organization's activities fall into four major categories: Public Communications, Information Services, Professional Development and Special Projects. The Education Outreach link downloads a pdf document with information on what members are doing in their communities.
 
International Tap Association
The International Tap Association's (ITA) mission is "to promote the understanding, preservation, and development of tap dance as an art form." The ITA is open for membership not only to tap dancers, but to anyone interested in tap. Through advocacy programs and special projects, the ITA educates dance professionals and the public about tap as an art form. A membership application is available on line. Scroll to the bottom of the page to locate links to a calendar of events, access discussion groups, and locate reference materials.

Ballet Folklorico
Amalia Hernandez's Ballet Folklorico site highlights her dance school in Mexico. Information on the origins of the school (currently celebrating its fiftieth anniversary), performance schedule, CD's & videos for sale are available in English and Spanish. A photo gallery of dancers in colorful, elaborate costumes gives the user a sense of the flavor of a ballet folklorico dance.
 
Latino ArtsNetwork of California - LAN
The Latino Arts Network of California (LAN) is a consortium of non-profit community-based Latino arts organizations who share a mission to strengthen and deepen the cooperative relationship among California's Latino arts organizations. Links are available to member organizations, including: the Watsonville Cultural Center, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Plaza de la Raza Mexican-American Heritage Plaza, etc. Within the individual sites there are some listings for dance, music, art and theatre classes for students.

Association of Hispanic Arts
Promoting Latino arts and artists, the New York Association of Hispanic Arts (AHA), offers highlights of its quarterly magazine. Articles incorporate Latino music and film, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Puerto Rican folklore and a Latina playwright’s journey. Information on opportunities, workshops, fellowships and grants are available. LOLA Net, Latino On-Line Arts Network, offers a searchable database for artists and cultural organizations around the country.
 
Americans for the Arts: At-Risk Youth
AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS is an "information clearinghouse with a 40-year track record of objective arts industry research dedicated to serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate the arts." On the page of the larger site, At-Risk students are addressed with tools for partnerships in an after school setting. Programs include Metropolitan Life Foundation YouthARTS Initiative and Coming Up Taller.
 
Arts for All, Inc.
Arts For All, an after-school program in the performing arts for children with disabilities, was founded by pediatric physical therapist, Marcia Berger. Located in Tucson, Arizona, Arts For All currently has twelve programs which merge human services and the arts. The students, ages three through adulthood improve their language through singing, their coordination through dance, their visual perception through art classes and their thought processes and communication through drama. Events offer ASL Interpretation, Audio Description, Wheelchair Accessibility and TactileTours. Videotapes, compact disks and books are available through the newsletter. At this time, after school Dance classes have not yet been posted.
 
AXIS Dance Company
Education and outreach have been a part of AXIS Dance Company's work in "integrated dance" that provides dance opportunities to all people regardless of background with and without disabilities since 1987. Residencies, performances and classes are offered as well as research papers on dance and disability. Video clips of eight of the company's nearly thirty works are available. There is an alphabetical listing of dance companies that employ a similar philosophy.
 
Body-Mind Rhythmic Movement
This site sequentially teaches rhythmic body movements that can be expanded and combined into patterns. It has easy to follow directions and illustrations, allowing a teacher with little dance experience to sequentially teach rhythmic body movements to a young audience. Academic focus activities are offered that tie body movement in with both Language Arts and Mathematics.
 
DanzActiva
Choreographer and dancer, Paulette Beauchamp founded DanzActiva in Puerto Rico. Young people with Down syndrome dance in company repertoire influenced by Beauchamp’s Afro-Caribbean culture, classical ballet, contemporary dance, the contrasting drama of ancient Japanese tradition, and other styles of theatre that include illusions and masks. The site is available in English and Spanish and features still photos of the multimedia dance presentations.
 
Infinity Dance Theater
Infinity Dance Theater is a non-traditional dance company committed to expanding the boundaries of dance and changing the world's perception of what a dancer is. The company performs works that include a variety of disciplines such as on-stage singers, actors, and theatrical techniques including gesture and story. Infinity has developed a curriculum for teaching this wheelchair dance technique which is deeply rooted in the principles of Classical Ballet and Modern Dance. Demonstration video is available for downloading.
 
National Arts and Disability Center
The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. The NADC is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media, and literary-arts communities. Its resource directories, annotated bibliographies, related links and conferences serve to advance artists with disabilities and accessibility to the arts. The NADC is a project of the University of California, at Los Angeles (UCLA), University Affiliated Program. A search feature is available under Resources Calendar of Events to access performance information.
 
National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities
ARTSEDGE, the National Arts and Education Information Network, hosted the online component of the first-ever National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities, which took place June 14-16, 1998. Online participants may still access the Forum's Agenda, Daily Updates, Concept Papers, Keynote Addresses (many of which, along with panel discussions, have been audio- and video-streamed at this site), People (biographies of the presenters and authors) and Final Recommendations
 
StopGAP
StopGAP is a Surrey, England Dance Company which uses each dancer's physical and intellectual potential as a starting point for new work. Their mission is to demonstrate what can be achieved through the spirit of integration in dance. The repertory is often presented in nontraditional and alternative spaces for people who may not have easy access to such opportunities. The site includes a Discussion Forum with performance dates and a downloadable copy of their philosophy.
 
The Coming Up Taller: Programs for Children and Youth At-Risk
Research and program descriptions are available from Coming Up Taller a private sector patrons program with the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. This is the fifth year of $10,000 awards to recognize and support excellence in arts and humanities programs that take place outside the school curriculum, beyond the classroom, and during the non-school hours.
 
The Gallaudet Dance Company
The Gallaudet Dance Company is a performing group whose members are undergraduate or graduate students at Gallaudet University, the world's only accredited liberal arts university for deaf and hard of hearing students. The company performs a variety of dance forms, such as modern dance, tap, jazz, and, of course, dances incorporating American Sign Language. The site includes important references in training deaf or hard of hearing dancers.
 
Touch Compass Dance Trust
Touch Compass Dance Company, under the direction of Catherine Chappell, empowers people of all abilities to become role models for the community. The New Zealand company’s website includes images and reviews of current work, including aerial projects. Two instructional manuals are available: “This Moment” with Stanford faculty member Martin Keogh and “The Passage.” Each manual documents teacher-training intensives and includes exercises and skills.
 
VSA Arts
This is a comprehensive site relating to art and the disabled. Provides advocacy, information and exhibition opportunities for special needs artists and students. In 1999 Very Special arts changed its name to VSA Arts. Now standing for Vision, Strength and Artistic Expression, VSA Arts is an International Organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities. The organization offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual arts.

ArtsZone
ArtsZone web modules are built around the documentaries and performance programs broadcast on Ovation, the Arts Network. Programming includes: performances, artist profiles and interviews, plus special performances around the world. Ovation is available through many cable networks and some satellite TV services. VHS copies of up to four programs a year are available through Ovation¹s lending library. Teacher guides, with lesson plans and web materials, for each program are located in the TeacherZone. The National Standards for Arts Education were used to create the teacher materials. The materials on the web site for each program are divided into six sections including materials for use prior to viewing, behind the scene looks at the creation of the television program, and links to additional web resources. Discussion groups, focused on the programming are also available for student and teacher use.
 
The Development of Western Civilization - World History - Renaissance
This site is a must for teachers who teach about the arts in the Renaissance period. Included are links to art, architecture, dance, music and theatre resources. Stepping Into the World of the American Musical Theatre:Dance Sets the Pace
This site describes a curriculum unit used at Conte Arts Magnet School. It is primarily aimed towards the dance educator, but has some valid information for the other disciplines too. It guides students through a series of activities, discussions of dance history, and workouts that will make them aware of the Broadway musical and the part dance plays in its overall production. The lessons demonstrate the connections between elements of dance, music, visual arts and drama and focus on Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story.

American Memory
The American Memory Project is built and maintained by the Library of Congress. Over 100 collections can be found in the National Digital Library. Broad Topics include: Performing Arts, Arts and Architecture, Languages and Literature. The collections are easily searchable and are available in several digital formats. Primary Source materials are continuously added to the project. New users may want to access the "How to View" section to learn more about the digital formats used in the collections and how best access these resources. The "Learning Page" contains activities, features and lesson plans for the use of the primary source documents.
 
The American Theatre Wing
The official website of the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards, your connection to Broadway's best. The site has archived information of past Tony Awards winners. The awards program is streamed live during the June broadcast.
 
The Library of Congress Performing Arts Reading Room
The Library of Congress Performing Arts Reading Room is an excellent starting point when searching for collections of materials for the performing arts housed at the Library of Congress. The most extensive collections are in the area of music, with dance and theatre collections being less extensive. The music collection spans 800 years of western music history and has limited but excellent on line images. A search of the collections can be conducted. Links are provided to information on public events, copyright office, foundations and publications of the Library of Congress.

24th Street Theatre
The 24th Street Theatre is a community-based professional theatre and arts center that has been bringing music, theatre, dance and visual art to Exposition Park and Greater Los Angeles since 1996. The Calendar of Events ranges from edgy music and theatre offerings to the Celebrity Reading Series where stories from award winning children's books are read aloud to childrens' audiences.

Ballet Pacifica
The Ballet Pacifica is Orange County's leading professional dance company and one of the area's top performing arts organizations. The Ballet Pacifica Company is comprised of the staff, professional dancers, apprentices, and conservatory teachers. Ballet Pacifica-Orange County's own professional company-performs its dynamic Contemporary Ballet Series, the Pacifica Choreographic Project and The Nutcracker at the intimate and beautiful Irvine Barclay Theatre.

C.K. Ladzekpo - African Music and Dance
C.K. Ladzekpo created this site, based on extensive research into African Dance/Drumming. Ladzekpo, a teacher at U.C. Berkeley, is also a master performer, composer and choreographer from the Anlo Ewe of Ghana. California Ballet Company is a non-profit performing arts organization dedicated to presenting a full season of high quality professional ballet for the greater San Diego community and to providing a forum for professional dancers to develop and maintain their artistic skills. The CBC repertoire encompasses over 70 ballets. The CBC provides outreach programs, including lecture demonstrations, and master classes in educational institutions. California Center for the Arts, Escondido
The California Center for the Arts, Escondido began as the Felicita Foundation for the Arts, founded in 1981. Located on a 12-acre campus in downtown Escondido, California, The Center encompasses all forms of the performing and visual arts in one location. The Center's mission is to promote the arts and their power to enrich the community by providing cultural, educational and entertainment opportunities of the highest quality. Carpenter Performing Arts Center, Long Beach
The Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of California State University Long Beach, opened in October 1994. Designed by local architect Donald Gibbs, the performance hall provides the surrounding community with hundreds of music, dance, film, and theatre events. Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts
The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts is a performing arts and conference facility, offering performances in music, dance and theatre. The Cerritos Center presents an annual season from August through May. The schedule, which includes over 150 performances, consists of an eclectic mix of artists. The Cerritos Center features a flexible theater capable of six different seating and stage configurations, ranging from a 1,800-seat arena theater to a 900-seat recital hall setting. City Ballet of San Diego

Ford Amphitheatre
The John Anson Ford Theatres, nestled in the Hollywood Hills, are owned and operated by the County of Los Angeles and located in a county regional park. Music, dance, film, theatre and family events are presented May through September. An 87-seat indoor theatre space, [INSIDE] THE FORD is the home of the "Hot Properties" season of new plays, a collaboration of the Arts Commission and A.S.K. Theater Projects. Irvine Barclay Theatre
The Irvine Barclay Theatre is a 756 seat performing arts center dedicated to presenting the best entertainment from across the nation and around the world to residents of Orange County and nearby areas. The Irvine Barclay Theatre is also home to many local performing arts groups. Performances include theatre, music and dance groups. Groups regularly performing at The Barclay include: Ballet Pacifica, Mozart Classical Orchestra, Opera Pacific, Pacific Symphony, and Pacific Chorale. Kennedy Center--Education & Outreach

Kodak Theatre
The Kodak Theatre is located in the heart of Hollywood. Since opening in November of 2001 the theatre has hosted a range of events and artists including dance, music and theatre performances plus special speakers and events. L.A. Spindulys Folk Dance Ensemble Home Page
This is a terrific resource for teachers and art educators. The L.A. Spindulys are a Lituanian Dance group. Their site offers video clips of performances, information about the dance group, how to contact the group and schedule events, and resources for the classroom.
 
McCallum Theatre for the Performing Arts
McCallum Theatre is located in Palm Desert, California and offers a variety of dance, music and theatre performances The theatre offers desert-inspired interiors and its 1,127 seats are set in an intimate environment reminiscent of a European opera house, with acoustics befitting the modern performer and audience. Music Center Arts and Education
The Education Division of the Music Center is one of the nation's foremost providers of arts-education services. Music Center-Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles
The Music Center is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Center Theatre Group (the Mark Taper and the Ahmanson Theatre), the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles Master Chorale as well as special events. National Arts and Disability Center
The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. The NADC is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media, and literary-arts communities. Its resource directories, annotated bibliographies, related links and conferences serve to advance artists with disabilities and accessibility to the arts. The NADC is a project of the University of California, at Los Angeles (UCLA), University Affiliated Program. Project Bandaloop
Project Bandaloop creates performances that blend dance, sport, ritual and environmental awareness. Inspired by the possibilities of climbing and repelling the company’s choreography draws on aerial, vertical and horizontal movement to craft dances, many of which are site-specific. The company has been performing since 1996 and is based in Oakland. The web site provides information regarding current and upcoming performances, booking and contact information, press releases and a gallery with videos and still photos of performances. San Diego Dance Theatre
Founded in 1972, the San Diego Dance Theater (SDDT) has enriched the cultural life of San Diego through countless dance concerts and trainings for young dancers. Jean Isaacs was appointed Artistic Director in 1997 and under her direction, SDDT has earned its reputation as a company of fully-professional dancers committed to unconventional and deeply courageous programming which expands access to the stage for dancers of many nationalities, races, ages, and physical abilities. San Francisco Ballet
San Francisco Ballet has a long tradition of artistic innovation and excellence and continues to push boundaries with cutting-edge new works by contemporary international artists. In addition, San Francisco Ballet participates in the annual summer festival at Stern Grove by offering a free outdoor performance. This annual event combines a relaxing picnic in the grass with 2:00 pm performances of several works from San Francisco Ballet's broad repertory of classical and contemporary ballets. Preceding the program, the Stern Grove Festival hosts a pre-performance conversation with Company dancers. The talk is typically held at noon in the Trocadero Clubhouse. Spreckles Performing Arts Center
The Dorothy Rohnert Spreckels Performing Arts Center, a city-owned and operated facility, provides performing arts programming from around the world for the residents of Rohnert Park, Sonoma County and the surrounding regions. The facility totals 41,000 square feet and houses two theatres designed and built exclusively for dance, music and theatrical performances. The Nellie W. Codding Theatre seats 550 patrons and offers a variety of dance, music and theatre performances. The web site provides links for ticket and subscription purchase, volunteering at the center, rental information, staff information, directions to the center, and general contact information. The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico
The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico presents main stage productions featuring innovative choreography and professional dancers. Audiences are treated to premiere full-length ballets such as "Las Posadas - The Dance", "Escenas de la Revolucion", and "Tierra Mestiza", as well as evenings of traditional Ballet Folklorico. The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico is Dallas' largest Hispanic arts organization as well as one of the Southwest's leading Ballet Folklorico troupes. Surrounding the main stage productions are educational programs for which local school children are treated to a shorter version of the main stage shows. Teachers receive study guides to prepare students for the theatrical and historical experience. Admission and transportation scholarships are offered to lower income schools. In addition ANMBF offers after school residences at area schools at no charge to the student or schools involved. In addition to learning traditional Mexican dances, students explore the history, culture, and geography of the region from which the dances originate.
 
The Mondavi Center
The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at the University of California, Davis opened on October 3, 2002, with a two-month long festival of performances by international touring artists, regional performing organizations, and music, theater, and dance ensembles from UC Davis. The Mondavi Center serves as a world-class venue for the UC Davis departments of Music and Theatre & Dance, a major K-12 arts education program, and one of the largest arts and lectures presenting programs in the nation. Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza

Zaccho Dance Theatre performs with an environment as if it were another performer. Cerritos Center Performing Arts
Friends of the Cerritos Center offers programs to teachers and students free of charge. As in the past, the Friends may be able to provide transportation to and from events for students if a school is not able to do so. The Arts Academy for K-12 Teachers is a popular program with no charge, that gives participants both the practical tools and the confidence to bring the arts back into the classroom. Teachers who attend are given the opportunity to sign-up for artists-in-residence to come to their schools and lead fun, art-filled workshops for students, and are invited to attend performances and special events at the Cerritos Center as the special guests of the Friends.
 
Kearny Street Workshop
The mission of Kearny Street Workshop is to produce and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American communities. KSW is a non-profit, community-based organization established to promote and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American (APA) communities. Kearny Street Workshop is based in San Francisco. Kearny Street Workshop's current programs include literary publications and readings, classes and workshops, history and culture-based presentations, and emerging artists programs. SF Ballet: Community Programs
San Francisco Ballet is dedicated to sharing the love of dance with the broadest possible audience. Over 35,000 people participate in their Community Programs annually, from school children, teachers, seniors and Bay Area families to fellow artists, volunteers, hospitals and the general public. Each year, San Francisco Ballet donates over 3,000 performance tickets to nonprofit organizations that serve many diverse Bar Area communities. Workshops are offered for families and teachers. Spectra Arts in Education Program
The SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is the winner of the Governor's Award for excellence in arts in education. The program provides over 200 visual, performing and literary arts offerings including: workshops, residencies, performances and Young at Art family fun days to over 27,000 Santa Cruz County public K-8 classrooms. The goal of the Cultural Council's SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is to assist schools in improving the quality of education through offering quality arts programs.
 
WESTAF-The Western States Arts Federation
WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation, is a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to the creative advancement and preservation of the arts.
