California Visual & Performing Arts Content Standards
View and download the content standards in dance, music, theatre and/or visual arts, developed for each grade level. These standards were adopted by the California State Board of Education on January 10, 2001.

National Standards for Arts Education
Developed by the Consortium of National Arts Education Associations (under the guidance of the National Committee for Standards in the Arts), the National Standards for Arts Education is a document which outlines basic arts learning outcomes integral to the comprehensive K-12 education of every American student.

CMEA - The California Association for Music Education
The purposes of CMEA is: to promote access to a sequential music education for all PreK through grade 12 students taught by fully qualified music educators; to support and improve existing music programs; to promote quality pre-service and in-service music teacher preparation programs; and, to create a greater awareness of the value of music education through partnerships with other associations and advocacy among state and local agencies. This web site includes information on jobs, festivals, publications, hot topics and much more!
 
MENC: The National Association for Music Education
The purpose of the MENC: the National Music educators association is to advance music education by encouraging the study and making of music. Members include: music teachers, university faculty, researchers, college students preparing to be teachers, high school honor society members and MusicFriends, community members who support music education. Information on the site includes: publications, job information, web resources, and discussion forums focused on areas of interest. TCAP - The California Arts Project
The California Arts Project (TCAP) is the state's subject matter project in Visual and Performing Arts. TCAP's central mission is to deepen teachers' knowledge of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, and to enhance instructional strategies for teaching these four disciplines to California's students, pre-kindergarten through post-secondary. This site hosts interesting features such as arts education research and a standards data base.
 
Actors Equity
Actors' Equity Association is the labor union representing over 40,000 American actors and stage managers working in the professional theatre. The site provides information for union members, news, (casting notices) events, links to related sites and membership services. Within the Actor's Equity web page a wonderful career resource is the "Casting Call² section. Although primarily for the Equity actor the section provides job openings for Actors and Stage Managers. Here students can obtain current information about job openings in their area or anywhere in the country. Search categories include "types of notice" includes Equity Principal, Equity Chorus, non-required Principal, non-required chorus, or stage manager. Other categories include "state" or "by contract" This is a good primer for the actor looking for job opportunities.
 
Aesthetics On-line
This is the web site for the American Society of Aesthetics. Members are interested in aesthetics, philosophy of art, art theory and art criticism. The organization sponsors conferences, publish a journal and newsletter, and sponsors mailing lists and member web pages. Visitors to the site will find the links under "Ideas" of special interest.
 
American Choral Directors Association
The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a non-profit music education organization whose purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research and teaching. ACDA members teach choral music in public and private schools: kindergarten through high school, and at college and university levels. The web site provides information regarding publications, conventions, local and state organizations, discussion forums, plus an on line store.
 
American Music Conference
Web site of the American Music Conference. The main focus is promoting the benifits of music, music making and music education. In depth information is provided on the ongoing scientific research uncovering new links between active music making and the inner workings of the human brain. American Music Therapy Association
Web site of the American Music Therapy Association. Excellent site for anyone in search of a Music Therapist or a Music Therpist looking for a new position. Convention and membership information for clinics and seminars listed.
 
American Orff-Schulwerk Association
The American Orff-Schulwerk Association is a professional organization of music and movement educators dedicated to the creative teaching approach developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. Orff Schulwerk uses poems, rhymes, games, songs, and dances as examples and basic materials. Categories of information on the web site include: conferences and events, grants & scholarships, local chapter information, organization publications and an on line store. The organization membership form is also available on line.
 
American String Teachers Association
The American String teachers Association with National School Orchestra Association promotes excellence in string and orchestra teaching and playing. Members include, students, teachers and performing artists and services are tailored to the level of member need. Web site information includes: publications, conference and workshop information, job postings and links to state chapters.
 
AEP - Arts Education Partnership
ARTS EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP on the World Wide Web provides a comprehensive listing of advocacy tools in print, on video and online with links to websites for obtaining resources from Partnership organizations. This includes information provided by the National Endowment for the Arts which assists non-profit organizations in identifying potential federal support for cultural programs and local access points for that support. Partners are listed in the annual Directory and partnering organizations include arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that have national scope and impact. This site is a resource for all those who need to make a case for strong arts education.
 
ASCAP-The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
ASCAP is a membership association of more than 120,000 U.S. composers, songwriters and publishers of every kind of music. Membership also extends to hundreds of thousands worldwide. ASCAP is the only U.S. performing rights organization created and controlled by composers, songwriters and music publishers, with a Board of Directors elected by and from the membership. Information on the web site includes: membership information, music licensing, legislation, and featured business articles and interviews. Of special interest to students and teachers may be J.A.M., Junior ASCAP Members, intended for students interested in music.
 
BMI
BMI is an American performing rights organization that represents approximately 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music. The non-profit-making company, founded in 1940, collects license fees on behalf of those American creators it represents, as well as thousands of creators from around the world who chose BMI for representation in the United States. The web site provides information for members and visitors. Visitors will find "About BMI" a good place to begin exploring the site. Features include a listening room, news, showcases and legislative updates. Quicktime or RealPlayer is required for files in the Listening Room.
 
CAC - California Arts Council
The mission of the CAC is to make available and accessible quality art reflecting all of California's diverse cultures; to support the state's broad economic, educational, and social goals through the arts; to provide leadership for all levels of the arts community; and to present effective programs that add a further dimension to our cities, our schools, our jobs, and our creative spirit. CALAA - California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies
The California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies (CALAA) is a non-profit, membership organization representing the state‚s 250 local arts agencies. CALAA defines local arts agencies as community organizations (private), or agencies of local government (public) which provide services, financial support, or other programs for a variety of arts organizations and/or individual artists, and the community as a whole. Community Arts Network
The Community Arts Network (CAN) project promotes information exchange, research and critical dialogue within the field of community-based arts, that is, art made as a voice and a force within a specific community of place, spirit or tradition. The CAN project is designed and managed by a partnership of Art in the Public Interest, a national nonprofit organization, and The Virginia Tech Department of Theatre Arts' Consortium for the Study of Theatre and Community. Click on Conversations to access forums/discussion board where you ask questions, discuss issues, and reflect on what you read on the CAN web site. APInews is the organization¹s regular newsletter on current events, and the Reading Room contains essays and links focusing on Community-based Arts.

Electronic Music Foundation (EMF) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing public understanding of the role that electronic music, in its myriad forms and technologies, plays in our world. Their mission is one of outreach and support. Select EMF Institute to view information on the past and future of electronic music. Grammy.com is the website for the Recording Academy. Organized in 1957, by a visionary group of music professionals and label executives in Los Angeles who recognized the need to create an organization that would represent the creative people in the recording arts and sciences. Membership is at one of three levels: Voting Members, Associate Members and Affiliate Members. Affiliate Members include music educators and students. The web site provides a variety of member information, news and academy activity information. Select Grammy Foundation to learn about the activities of the non-profit arm of the Recording Academy.
 
International Association for Jazz Education
The International Association for Jazz Education is a non-profit organization whose programs are aimed at nurturing the understanding and appreciation of jazz, providing leadership to educators regarding curriculum and performance, and providing teachers, students, and artists with information and resources. The web site contains information regarding the association's annual conference, the Artist Outreach Network, publications, local and regional information, plus links to other jazz resources.

The National Association of Teachers of Singing
This is the official website of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. NATS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging the highest standards of singing through excellence in teaching and the promotion of vocal education and research. The organization's goals include the professional advancement of the talented and the enrichment of the general public. Membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing is open to any citizen of any country whose professional training and experience qualify him or her as a teacher of singing. There are three levels of new membership: Full Membership, Associate Membership, and Affiliate Membership.
 
Percussive Arts Society
The web site of the Percussive Arts Society is informative and useful for both teachers and students. Search for in depth information on anything regarding percussion technique, instruments, education, research, performance and appreciation throughout the world. Click on the small blue magnifying glass symbol in upper right to see an overview of the whole site. An online magazine is included for the latest percussion news plus valuable links.

Website of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. Americans for the Arts: At-Risk Youth
AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS is an "information clearinghouse with a 40-year track record of objective arts industry research dedicated to serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate the arts." On the page of the larger site, At-Risk students are addressed with tools for partnerships in an after school setting. Programs include Metropolitan Life Foundation YouthARTS Initiative and Coming Up Taller.
 
Arts for All, Inc.
Arts For All, an after-school program in the performing arts for children with disabilities, was founded by pediatric physical therapist, Marcia Berger. Located in Tucson, Arizona, Arts For All currently has twelve programs which merge human services and the arts. The students, ages three through adulthood improve their language through singing, their coordination through dance, their visual perception through art classes and their thought processes and communication through drama. Events offer ASL Interpretation, Audio Description, Wheelchair Accessibility and TactileTours. Videotapes, compact disks and books are available through the newsletter. At this time, after school Dance classes have not yet been posted.
 
Coalition for Disabled Musicians
Established in 1986, the Coalition for Disabled Musicians, Inc. (CDM) is a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to enabling physically disabled musicians to pursue their musical dreams. The site includes a National Referral Service to facilitate contact between musicians and organizations with similar interests on a local level. CDM performs at schools and businesses inspiring students of all abilities. Sound samples are available for download. Merchandise, services, etc. do have charges associated with them.
 
Healing Harps
Healing Harps is a not-for-profit organization focusing on music and musicianship co-founded by Ron Price, Professor of Harp at Northern Illinois University. While celebrating life through its unique voice, the diverse membership ranging in age from four to ninety-six includes many members challenged by disabilities or health problems. Healing Harps conducts a Teacher Training Program in which professional level harpists work with faculty in the fields of medicine, psychology, neuro-sciences, and music. Festivals and Monster Days are conducted nationwide several times a year.
 
High Beam Festival
High Beam Festival is Australia’s biennial international arts festival, showcasing contemporary works influenced or inspired by experience of disability. This ten day multi-arts festival presents the latest in disability arts – new perceptions, innovations and visions. High Beam is the largest festival of its type in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a spectacular program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, art, debate, workshops and community events.
 
National Arts and Disability Center
The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. The NADC is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media, and literary-arts communities. Its resource directories, annotated bibliographies, related links and conferences serve to advance artists with disabilities and accessibility to the arts. The NADC is a project of the University of California, at Los Angeles (UCLA), University Affiliated Program. A search feature is available under Resources Calendar of Events to access performance information.
 
National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities
ARTSEDGE, the National Arts and Education Information Network, hosted the online component of the first-ever National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities, which took place June 14-16, 1998. Online participants may still access the Forum's Agenda, Daily Updates, Concept Papers, Keynote Addresses (many of which, along with panel discussions, have been audio- and video-streamed at this site), People (biographies of the presenters and authors) and Final Recommendations
 
P. Buckley Moss Foundation
Recognizing the need to promote and develop ways to integrate the arts into general and special education programs, the P. Buckley Moss Society established the Foundation in 1995. The Foundation¹s mission is to increase public awareness and to develop and implement effective arts instruction for children with special needs. Information about annual conferences, national awards for teachers, post secondary scholarships for students with disabilities and a library of strategies is available to download.
 
Perkins School for the Blind
Famous alumna Helen Keller’s story is available along with pictures and quotes from her autobiography. Music materials in Braille, large print, and cassette formats are provided to library patrons through the National Library Service. A special centralized library for musicians with disabilities features a collection of more than 30,000 books, musical scores and instructional recordings. Audio courses in guitar, recorder, accordion, piano, organ, and voice have been specifically developed.
 
The Coming Up Taller: Arts and Humanities Programs for Children and Youth At-Risk
Research and program descriptions are available from Coming Up Taller a private sector patrons program with the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. This is the fifth year of $10,000 awards to recognize and support excellence in arts and humanities programs that take place outside the school curriculum, beyond the classroom, and during the non-school hours.
 
VSA Arts
This is a comprehensive site relating to art and the disabled. Provides advocacy, information and exhibition opportunities for special needs artists and students. In 1999 Very Special arts changed its name to VSA Arts. Now standing for Vision, Strength and Artistic Expression, VSA Arts is an International Organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities. The organization offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual arts.

Music Lessons for K-6
The list of individual music lesson plans provided are written by CSU Chico student teachers. Additional lessons are posted each semester. Two of the lessons integrate visual arts with music and one integrates dance and P.E. with music. All plans are clearly written and specifically reference the CA State Standards in music and the related discipline(s)the lesson teaches. Lesson titles include: Halloween, Musical Rhythm Instruments, Native American Music and Dance Activity, Peter and the Wolf Instructional Listening Game, Recorder, Rhythm and Rhyme, Rhythm Sticks, and Sight Reading and Rhythmic Patterns.

A Music Science Connection
This is a third grade music unit created by two Core Knowledge teachers that explores both the principles of music and the principles of sound. Although this unit was designed with the Core Knowledge teacher in mind, it covers some of the California Content Standards for music in the third grade. Adobe Acrobat is needed to view this PDF unit.
 
Cracking the Elements of Music
This is a simple music unit which uses the story of the Nutcracker to teach the basic elements of music to kindergarten students. This unit was developed by Core Knowledge teachers to meet the Core Knowledge Standards, but encompasses some of the California State Standards for Music at the kindergarten level. Acrobat Reader is needed to view this PDF unit.
 
Standards-Based Units - Intermediate
 
Discovering Opera through Rigoletto
This 8 lesson unit fuses language arts, theatre and music to explore Verdi's opera "Rigoletto". It explores the opera's plot and characters. The lessons require the use of a recording of the opera that includes a libretto with a good translation (not included). Music teachers who use this unit may want to supplement it with additional material to tie the lessons more intimately to the music itself.

This 8 lesson unit fuses language arts, theatre and music to explore Verdi's opera "Rigoletto". It explores the opera's plot and characters. The lessons require the use of a recording of the opera that includes a libretto with a good translation (not included). Music teachers who use this unit may want to supplement it with additional material to tie the lessons more intimately to the music itself.
 
Irving Berlin, Through The Years
This is an eighth grade Core Knowledge unit which focuses on the life and music of Irving Berlin, who is considered to be one of America's greatest composers. This unit uses Berlin's music to chronicle the history of the time in which he lived. This is an excellent unit for a teacher who wishes to expose students to the genre of American music and who would like to tie that theme together with the concept of how music is shaped by history. Stepping Into the World of the American Musical Theatre: Dance Sets the Pace
This site describes a curriculum unit used at Conte Arts Magnet School. It is primarily aimed towards the dance educator, but has some valid information for the other disciplines too. The MOMI Museum of Musical Instruments
A fascinating site of virtual collections featuring guitars, mandolins, and musicians of the last two centuries. The beautiful exhibits include photographs, audio files, and valuable historical information. Broadway on Tour
Broadway on Tour was founded by Daniel Halkyard in 1989 in Placentia, California, to provide a place for kids who wanted to perform on stage to learn in a professional manner. BOT has a long term agreement with the historic Ebell Theater in Santa Ana, California to produce one and two hour musical matinee performances featuring characters and stories recognizable by kids from ages three to ten. Shows are performed by kids aged eight to eighteen, with auditions open to the public. In addition to the performances at the Ebell Theatre a touring group can be booked for community events. Spreckles Performing Arts Center
The Dorothy Rohnert Spreckels Performing Arts Center, a city-owned and operated facility, provides performing arts programming from around the world for the residents of Rohnert Park, Sonoma County and the surrounding regions. The facility totals 41,000 square feet and houses two theatres designed and built exclusively for dance, music and theatrical performances. The Nellie W. Starlight Musical Theatre
The San Diego Civic Light Opera Company is a musical theatre company performing during the summer season at the Starlight Bowl in Balboa park and during the winter season at indoor venues, most recently the Sycuan Casino & Resort in El Cajon. The theatre employs equity actors in the leading roles and holds open audition calls for other roles. The Lamplighters Music Theatre
The Lamplighters is San Francisco's only year-round musical theatre company. They specialize in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan and also regularly present comic operas and musicals from European and American repertoires as well as their own original Gala, written and produced by the company every year. Lamplighters Musical Theatre has been producing operetta and musical theatre since 1952. Performances of The Lamplighters take place at three bay area venues: the Ira and Leonore S. The Mondavi Center
The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at the University of California, Davis opened on October 3, 2002, with a two-month long festival of performances by international touring artists, regional performing organizations, and music, theater, and dance ensembles from UC Davis. The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra

The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is the largest performing arts center between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Cerritos Center Performing Arts
Friends of the Cerritos Center offers programs to teachers and students free of charge. As in the past, the Friends may be able to provide transportation to and from events for students if a school is not able to do so. The Arts Academy for K-12 Teachers is a popular program with no charge, that gives participants both the practical tools and the confidence to bring the arts back into the classroom. Teachers who attend are given the opportunity to sign-up for artists-in-residence to come to their schools and lead fun, art-filled workshops for students, and are invited to attend performances and special events at the Cerritos Center as the special guests of the Friends.

The GRAMMY® Foundation, a non-profit arm of the Recording Academy, has a challenging responsibility to bring national attention to important issues such as the value of music and arts education and preserving our rich cultural legacy for future generations. Through its nationwide efforts, the Foundation has made great inroads. Foundation programs include: Smart Symphonies, Music in High Places, Concerts for Young People, Grammy in the Schools: Careers, Mentoring, High School Jazz Ensembles and programs offered through the Leonard Bernstein Center for Learning.
 
Kearny Street Workshop
The mission of Kearny Street Workshop is to produce and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American communities. KSW is a non-profit, community-based organization established to promote and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American (APA) communities. Kearny Street Workshop is based in San Francisco. Kearny Street Workshop's current programs include literary publications and readings, classes and workshops, history and culture-based presentations, and emerging artists programs. KSW-Next presents an annual festival that features the work of over 100 young Asian Pacific American artists each year. Los Angeles Opera Community Programs
Los Angeles Opera invites everyone, from students to seniors, to make a journey of discovery into this most exciting art form! Los Angeles Opera's Department of Education and Community Programs has served over 600,000 people since its inception in 1986. Music Center Arts and Education
The Education Division of the Music Center is one of the nation's foremost providers of arts-education services. Established in 1979 to provide opportunities for lifelong learning in the arts and to enrich education of all children by bringing the arts into the classroom. Philharmonic Society

The SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is the winner of the Governor's Award for excellence in arts in education. The goal of the Cultural Council's SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is to assist schools in improving the quality of education through offering quality arts programs.

WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation, is a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to the creative advancement and preservation of the arts. WESTAF fulfills its mission to strengthen the financial, organizational, and policy infrastructure of the arts in the West by providing innovative programs and services.
