California Visual & Performing Arts Content Standards
View and download the content standards in dance, music, theatre and/or visual arts, developed for each grade level. These standards were adopted by the California State Board of Education on January 10, 2001.

National Standards for Arts Education
Developed by the Consortium of National Arts Education Associations (under the guidance of the National Committee for Standards in the Arts), the National Standards for Arts Education is a document which outlines basic arts learning outcomes integral to the comprehensive K-12 education of every American student.

Broadcast Education Association
Broadcast Education Association is a non-profit organization that provides a critical link between colleges and the broadcast industry. While the membership is primarily for institutions of higher learning and industry professionals a wealth of information and contacts are available. The site provides a variety of links to university/instructional programs, course assignments and requirements, key research websites, academic job openings, and a multimedia bibliography. Scholarships are available to students of member institutions; several of which are in California. Excellent career opportunities can be fund under "Academic Job Openings" and "Media Sites"
 
Center for Media Literacy 2000
"Center for Media Literacy, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the ability to communicate in all media forms, print and electronic, as well as to access, understand, analyze and evaluate the powerful images, words and sounds that make up our contemporary media culture." This is an excellent background resource for teachers offering conferences, satellite broadcasts, lesson plans, articles.
 
Theatre Journal - Project Muse
Theatre Journal publishes articles and reviews to be used for theatre studies. Archived articles are reprinted for subscribed institutions. Theatre Journal focuses on social and historical studies, production reviews and theoretical inquiries.

CETA - California Educational Theatre Association
This site provides contact information for the board of directors, a calendar of events, and hot spots to visit for a variety of theatre resources.
 
EdTA - Educational Theatre Association
The Educational Theatre Association offers a range of services and support to theatre educators and their students. The organization offers professional development programs, a magazine and quarterly journal, discussion groups, advocacy information and student theatre festivals. The International Thespian Society is the student honorary branch of this organization. 1st time visitors to the site should select the Visitor icon to learn more about the organization and the support they offer.
 
AATE OnLine
Official Web Site of the American Alliance of Theatre in Education. This is a valuable site for theatre educators at all levels, educational theatre specialists, professional artists working with schools and community theatre specialists. A PDF version of the AATE Newsletter is available for download.
 
TCAP - The California Arts Project
The California Arts Project (TCAP) is the state's subject matter project in Visual and Performing Arts. TCAP's central mission is to deepen teachers' knowledge of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, and to enhance instructional strategies for teaching these four disciplines to California's students, pre-kindergarten through post-secondary. This site hosts interesting features such as arts education research and a standards data base.
 
Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences -- founded one month after network television was born in 1946 -- is a non-profit corporation devoted to the advancement of telecommunications arts and sciences and to fostering creative leadership in the telecommunications industry. The academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes outstanding achievements in the telecommunications industry through the conferring of annual Emmy Awards. The site provides information on the Emmy Awards program, membership information, and information on activities of the academy. Activities of the Foundation, which sponsors educational and archival programs addressing a variety of issues, can also be found on the web site.
 
Actors Equity
Actors' Equity Association is the labor union representing over 40,000 American actors and stage managers working in the professional theatre. The site provides information for union members, news, (casting notices) events, links to related sites and membership services. Within the Actor's Equity web page a wonderful career resource is the "Casting Call² section. Although primarily for the Equity actor the section provides job openings for Actors and Stage Managers. Here students can obtain current information about job openings in their area or anywhere in the country. Search categories include "types of notice" includes Equity Principal, Equity Chorus, non-required Principal, non-required chorus, or stage manager. Other categories include "state" or "by contract" This is a good primer for the actor looking for job opportunities.
 
Aesthetics On-line
This is the web site for the American Society of Aesthetics. Members are interested in aesthetics, philosophy of art, art theory and art criticism. The organization sponsors conferences, publish a journal and newsletter, and sponsors mailing lists and member web pages. Visitors to the site will find the links under "Ideas" of special interest.
 
AIVF Association of Independent Video & Film
The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF) is a 25-year old national trade association based in New York City that provides support for individual producers and advocacy for the media arts field. AIVF is supported by sister organization the Foundation for Independent Video and Film (FIVF), a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit. Select resources to learning about publications, workshops and on line resources offered to members. The Independent is the organization's magazine, an on line version of the magazine archives many articles. AIVF also has a monthly e-newsletter and offers discussion groups.
 
The American Society for Theatre Research
The American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR), established in 1956, provides an organization and public voice for theatre scholars and promotes the cause of theatre as a field for serious scholarly study and research. The web site provides membership information, conference information, information on the organization's publications and grants and awards program. Links to theatre resources on the web are also provided.
 
AEP - Arts Education Partnership
ARTS EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP on the World Wide Web provides a comprehensive listing of advocacy tools in print, on video and online with links to websites for obtaining resources from Partnership organizations. This includes information provided by the National Endowment for the Arts which assists non-profit organizations in identifying potential federal support for cultural programs and local access points for that support. Partners are listed in the annual Directory and partnering organizations include arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that have national scope and impact. This site is a resource for all those who need to make a case for strong arts education.
 
Association for Theatre in Higher Education
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education provides vision and leadership for the profession and promotes excellence in theatre education. Members include post-secondary faculty, graduate students, and artists. The website has information regarding publications, the national conference, focus groups and an additional resource section.
 
ATME (The Association of Theatre Movement Educators)
The Association of Theatre Movement Educators had its beginning in the 1960s in the University and College Theatre Association that was a sub-division of the American Theatre Association. The Association of Theatre Movement Educators holds as its mission shaping the future of kinesthetic and aesthetic education. ATME members receive information on conferences, workshops, movement training, and employment opportunities and are able to exchange ideas, methods, and philosophies through the forum of the newsletter. The web site provides membership information and background information on the organization and their activities.

The mission of the CAC is to make available and accessible quality art reflecting all of California's diverse cultures; to support the state's broad economic, educational, and social goals through the arts; to provide leadership for all levels of the arts community; and to present effective programs that add a further dimension to our cities, our schools, our jobs, and our creative spirit. Community Arts Network
The Community Arts Network (CAN) project promotes information exchange, research and critical dialogue within the field of community-based arts, that is, art made as a voice and a force within a specific community of place, spirit or tradition. The CAN project is designed and managed by a partnership of Art in the Public Interest, a national nonprofit organization, and The Virginia Tech Department of Theatre Arts' Consortium for the Study of Theatre and Community. Click on Conversations to access forums/discussion board where you ask questions, discuss issues, and reflect on what you read on the CAN web site. APInews is the organization¹s regular newsletter on current events, and the Reading Room contains essays and links focusing on Community-based Arts.
 
Directors Guild of America
The Directors Guild of America represents more than 12,000 members working in U.S. cities and abroad. Their creative work is represented in theatrical, industrial, educational and documentary films and television, as well as, videos and commercials. Their web site provides member information and background and historical information on the guild.
 
The Institute of Outdoor Drama
Established in 1963, The Institute of Outdoor Drama is the only organization in the U.S. providing national leadership in fostering artistic and managerial excellence and expansion of the outdoor drama movement through training, research and advisory programs, and serves as a national clearinghouse for more than 120 constituent theatres companies across the nation. The site provides information regard the organization's annual conference, publication information, and contact information for theatres, personnel, and research and resource libraries.

League of Historic American Theatres
The League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT) is an international not-for-profit membership association. LHAT is a network of people who appreciate the cultural and architectural heritage of historic theatres and who work locally and nationally to rehabilitate them to serve communities throughout North America and abroad. Members of the League include theatre operators and managers, preservation activists, architects, structural engineers, design and acoustical consultants, urban planners, restorationists, vendors, booking and artist management firms, fund raising consultants, and many other types of service providers and members of the general public who serve or are interested in historic theatres. The web site provides information on their annual conference and theatre tours, a job bank, LHAT programs and services and general membership information. Membership application is available on line.
 
The National Association for Drama Therapy
The National Association for Drama Therapy is a non-profit association incorporated in 1979 to establish and uphold high standards of professional competence and ethics among drama therapists; to develop criteria for training and registration; to sponsor publications and conferences; and to promote the profession of drama therapy through information and advocacy. A variety of information is found on the web site including: information on conferences, publications, legislation effecting the profession, job announcements and information to assist those interested in a career in drama therapy.
 
Puppeteers of America
Puppeteers of America, a national nonprofit organization, provides information, encourages performances, and builds a community of people who love puppet theatre. Members include: professional puppeteers, puppet builders, teachers, librarians, therapists, youth leaders, and hobbyists. The on line Puppetry Store offers a variety of materials including: books, scripts, videos, and patterns for making puppets. Click on the Guilds and Festivals to learn about local groups and events.
 
Screen Actors Guild
Screen Actors Guild is the labor union representing actors working in the movie and television industry. The site provides information for union members, news, information regarding current "Hot Topics" and membership services. Click on "SAG History" to access a variety of information on the Screen Actors Guild, which was formed in 1933. The "Beginning Actors" link provides information for those starting or wishing to pursue a career in this field.
 
StoryNet
This is the Home Site of the National Storytelling Network, a membership organization dedicated to advancing the art of storytelling. The site provides links for locating a variety of information regarding the Art of Storytelling. Links are provided to: Professional Storytellers, local Guilds for Storytelling, a calendar of events and conferences, books and tapes, online stories, information regarding awards and research, and other resources for students, teachers and artists wishing to learn more about the Storytelling Art.
 
Writers Guild of America
The Writers Guild of America West represents writers in the motion picture, broadcast, cable and new media industries. Their web site provides information for members as well as a wealth of information for aspiring writers. Select profiles to read the biographical profiles of current featured members. A section is also maintained on the web site that highlights Emmy award winning writers. Articles written by members are also archived on the site, many provide interesting insights into current topics in the profession.

Arts in Argentina
Arteargentino is a site written exclusively in Spanish with links to the arts in Argentina. Clicking on one of the many regions of Argentina brings the user to a menu of the arts and artists of the area. Visual arts, music, theatre and dance are highlighted as well as other cultural items. Some of the links are slow and teachers should review material periodically since the content changes.
 
Artsedge - Teaching Materials
The Kennedy Center's Artsedge is a rich site featuring National Standards-based curriculum, lessons, and activities. It hosts many useful weblinks and an idea exchange for teachers of the visual and performing arts.
 
Bilingual Foundation of the Arts
Bilingual Foundation of the Arts is a non-profit theater company, and the only full-time, professional bilingual theatre company on the West Coast. The Theatre-In-Education Program provides educational, theatrical presentations that engender self-esteem, as well as inter-cultural awareness and understanding among young children. In addition "Theatre for Youth/Teatro para Los Juvenes" is a program that stimulates a forum for students' response to issues facing adolescents in today's world. All productions come complete with curriculum guides for pre- and post- show class enrichment.

Latino ArtsNetwork of California - LAN
"The Latino Arts Network of California (LAN) is a consortium of non-profit community-based Latino arts organizations who share a mission to strengthen and deepen the cooperative relationship among California's Latino arts organizations." Links are available to member organizations, including: the Watsonville Cultural Center, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Plaza de la Raza Mexican-American Heritage Plaza, etc. Within the individual sites there are some listings for dance, music, art and theatre classes for students.
 
Teatro/Danza/Musica
This site provides information exclusively in Spanish, highlighting Mexican performers in theatre, music and dance in the second half of the twentieth century. The Spanish text would be useful to intermediate native Spanish-speaking students or in a Spanish class studying cultural elements of Mexico.
 
Special Needs
 
Americans for the Arts: At-Risk Youth
AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS is an "information clearinghouse with a 40-year track record of objective arts industry research dedicated to serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate the arts." On the page of the larger site, At-Risk students are addressed with tools for partnerships in an after school setting. Programs include Metropolitan Life Foundation YouthARTS Initiative and Coming Up Taller.
 
Arts for All, Inc.
Arts For All, an after-school program in the performing arts for children with disabilities, was founded by pediatric physical therapist, Marcia Berger. Located in Tucson, Arizona, Arts For All currently has twelve programs which merge human services and the arts. The students, ages three through adulthood improve their language through singing, their coordination through dance, their visual perception through art classes and their thought processes and communication through drama. Events offer ASL Interpretation, Audio Description, Wheelchair Accessibility and TactileTours. Videotapes, compact disks and books are available through the newsletter. At this time, after school Dance classes have not yet been posted.
 
CanTeach
CanTeach is a Canadian meta-site comprised of resources and links for elementary teachers. Of interest to teachers of special needs arts students is a “Theme List” of books about children with disabilities and illnesses. In “Elementary Resources,” author Dan Lukiv’s “Home-grown Publishing” describes a creative writing program called “Story Day.” Part Two has a complete description of the Story Day process, which can easily be adapted to a playwrighting format. The involvement of a diverse group of students within the classroom culture powers the production.
 
Creative Alternatives of New York
Creative Alternatives of New York provides comprehensive therapeutic theatre workshops to populations with special needs. With a unique combination of theatre and modern group psychotherapy, CANY artists lead workshops and perform theater in shelters for the homeless, in family residences for single mothers and their children, in veterans hospitals, in troubled inner city schools and in alcohol rehabilitation centers. This site is a good place to start because the resources are somewhat limited.
 
Firehouse Theatre Company
Firehouse Theatre activities include workshops and productions of professional and emerging playwrights. Especially noted for including writers and performers with physical or sensory disabilities, Firehouse Theatre Company has worked extensively with the children and teenagers involved in public schools.
 
Heart 'n Soul
The musical theatre company is comprised of 14 performers with learning disabilities who work closely with four professional musicians. Members write their own music and lyrics and have devised and toured 10 full-scale musical productions across the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. Heart 'n Soul outreach includes a television show, satellite workshops and residencies.
 
High Beam Festival
High Beam Festival is Australia’s biennial international arts festival, showcasing contemporary works influenced or inspired by experience of disability. This ten day multi-arts festival presents the latest in disability arts – new perceptions, innovations and visions. High Beam is the largest festival of its type in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a spectacular program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, art, debate, workshops and community events.
 
National Arts and Disability Center
The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. The NADC is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media, and literary-arts communities. Its resource directories, annotated bibliographies, related links and conferences serve to advance artists with disabilities and accessibility to the arts. The NADC is a project of the University of California, at Los Angeles (UCLA), University Affiliated Program. A search feature is available under Resources Calendar of Events to access performance information.
 
National Center for Accessible Media
The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media is a research and development facility dedicated achieving media access equality for people with disabilities. The site includes a search feature for theatres that screen current films with Rear Window® Captioning, for deaf and hard-of–hearing students, and DVS Theatrical, for blind and visually impaired students. Also of interest, The Personal Captioning Project that studied classroom application and learning benefits of creating one’s own captioned video. Materials available from the Center are a video, journal articles and a handbook, Writing with Video: an Idea Book for Captioning in the Classroom.
 
National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities
ARTSEDGE, the National Arts and Education Information Network, hosted the online component of the first-ever National Forum on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities, which took place June 14-16, 1998. Online participants may still access the Forum's Agenda, Daily Updates, Concept Papers, Keynote Addresses (many of which, along with panel discussions, have been audio- and video-streamed at this site), People (biographies of the presenters and authors) and Final Recommendations
 
National Theatre of the Deaf
The National Theatre of the Deaf is an artistic haven for performing artists using American Sign Language where they can discover, develop, and enhance their talent. NTD is the premiere theatre company for the Deaf artist, creating professional performing opportunities at first class levels across the country and around the world. NTD Professional Theatre School (PTS) is the only professional theatre-training program for deaf people in American. The PTS Jr program is for talented deaf high school students. NTD also offers professional development programs which can be found under "The Actor's Academy".
 
National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped
The National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped provides the disabled community with the communication skills necessary to pursue a life in professional theatre and enhance their opportunities in the workplace. Since 1977 NTWH , has been an advocate for persons with disabilities and offered a forum for dramatic literature on these themes.
 
Non Traditional Casting Project
NTCP works to promote inclusive hiring practices and standards, diversity in leadership and balanced portrayals of persons of color and persons with disabilities. NTCP’s aim is to achieve a theatre, film and television industry that accurately reflects our populace. Available on line is the New Traditions magazine a compendium of articles on diversity by playwrights, actors and directors. Listening with an Open Eye includes information about Deaf culture and American Sign Language for planning a production.
 
P. Buckley Moss Foundation
Recognizing the need to promote and develop ways to integrate the arts into general and special education programs, the P. Buckley Moss Society established the Foundation in 1995. The Foundation¹s mission is to increase public awareness and to develop and implement effective arts instruction for children with special needs. Information about annual conferences, national awards for teachers, post secondary scholarships for students with disabilities and a library of strategies is available to download.
 
Coming Up Taller: Arts and Humanities Programs for Children and Youth At-Risk
Research and program descriptions are available from Coming Up Taller a private sector patrons program with the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. This is the fifth year of $10,000 awards to recognize and support excellence in arts and humanities programs that take place outside the school curriculum, beyond the classroom, and during the non-school hours.
 
Theatre Communications Group
In "We are not a Metaphor, A Conversation About Representation" moderated by Kathleen Tolan, disabled theatre artists challenge assumptions about what disability is and what it means. The text of the conversation is published by Theatre Communications Group (TCG) a national service organization for the American Theatre that exists to strengthen, nurture and promote not-for-profit American theatre. TGC Live involves online chats with theatre artists and cultural leaders which may be a problem for student users.
 
VSA Arts
This is a comprehensive site relating to art and the disabled. Provides advocacy, information and exhibition opportunities for special needs artists and students. In 1999 Very Special arts changed its name to VSA Arts. Now standing for Vision, Strength and Artistic Expression, VSA Arts is an International Organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities. The organization offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual arts.

The lessons tend to be activities rather than a standards based approach, but offers a starting point in developing theatre units of study. This resource is part of the larger Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, which posts core content lessons.

This site is a well-organized and annotated site of puppetry resources useful to teachers, parents, students and professional puppeteers. Information includes: puppetry organizations, puppetry traditions around the world, exhibits and museum links, information and resources for building puppets and stages, puppetry definitions, ideas and lessons for use of puppets in education and more.

Award winning author, storyteller Aaron Shepard offers a site with everything you wanted to know about Readers' Theatre. Scripts are downloadable free for educational purposes. Most scripts are aimed at grades 3 through 9 with emphasis on world tales from a variety of cultures told with humor.

Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet
This site contains numerous well-organized and annotated resources for the study and production of Shakespeare. Resources include: historical background on Shakespeare and his times, information on the Globe Theatre, collected works and literary critics and journals, plus resources for costumes, music, dance and other aspects of Elizabethan Performance. It is recommended that first time visitors read the Introduction to the site as it explains the structure and resource categories.
 
Native Web
Native Web presents detailed information on the arts of native cultures around the world through a searchable database. Use the search engine to bring you a rich list of diverse resources by using terms such as 'art', 'artists and artisans', 'perfoming arts', 'music' etc. Many sites listed are in the culture's native language.

ArtsZone
ArtsZone web modules are built around the documentaries and performance programs broadcast on Ovation, the Arts Network. Programming includes: performances, artist profiles and interviews, plus special performances around the world. Ovation is available through many cable networks and some satellite TV services. VHS copies of up to four programs a year are available through Ovation¹s lending library. Teacher guides, with lesson plans and web materials, for each program are located in the TeacherZone. The National Standards for Arts Education were used to create the teacher materials. The materials on the web site for each program are divided into six sections including materials for use prior to viewing, behind the scene looks at the creation of the television program, and links to additional web resources. Discussion groups, focused on the programming are also available for student and teacher use.

National Standards and Unit Lesson Plans
The National Standards for Arts Education: Theatre are the highlight of this site. But the site also includes very good units of study in a variety of areas in theatre. The lessons are not linked to the California standards, but could esaily be. They are set up with introductions, "hooks" to get students interested and involved and evaluation and reflection questions at the end for each lesson. The lessons in each unit proceed in a logical manner, using the skills from previous lessons.

Stepping Into the World of the American Musical Theatre: Dance Sets the Pace
This site describes a curriculum unit used at Conte Arts Magnet School. It is primarily aimed towards the dance educator, but has some valid information for the other disciplines too. It guides students through a series of activities, discussions of dance history, and workouts that will make them aware of the Broadway musical and the part dance plays in its overall production. The American Memory Project is built and maintained by the Library of Congress. Over 100 collections can be found in the National Digital Library. Primary Source materials are continuously added to the project. New users may want to access the "How to View" section to learn more about the digital formats used in the collections and how best access these resources. Anne Frank House
"The Diary of Anne Frank" is part of California core literature and one of the most widely read books in the world. Using the play version is an excellent entry point where theatre, language arts and social science intersect. The Anne Frank House is a museum where visitors are given the opportunity to personally envision what happened during the hiding period. Information on the different versions of the Diary is available. An award winning CD-ROM also available depicts the building as it looked during the hiding period. The house was completely refurnished for the making of the CD-ROM. The photos of this reconstruction have been reworked into three-dimensional images. In this way the user can wander through all the rooms of the house. There is an Education section of the site containing additional information including; articles and notes for research. Note that some articles may not be appropriate for elementary or middle school students.
 
Arts in Argentina
Arteargentino is a site written exclusively in Spanish with links to the arts in Argentina. Clicking on one of the many regions of Argentina brings the user to a menu of the arts and artists of the area. Visual arts, music, theatre and dance are highlighted as well as other cultural items. Some of the links are slow and teachers should review material periodically since the content changes.
 
Broadway Archive
The Broadway Theatre Archive is an extensive catalogue of Broadway plays and great works of literature produced for television over the past five decades. Among them are the anthology series produced for the three major television networks and PBS, including "Great Performances," "American Playhouse" and "Theater in America." A good resource for teachers the tapes are available for purchase and the video clips are often enough to hook students looking for scenes. Teachers may want to review the clips before having students use them.
 
English Server Drama Collection
This site contains a collection of original plays and screenplays, criticism and links to other sites concerned with theatre. It publishes both classic and contemporary works.
 
Motion Picture and Television Reading Room
This site is the starting point for searching the Library of Congress Motion Picture Collections. The library began collecting motion pictures as historical records in 1942. The Motion Picture Collection is searchable and the site has links and instructions for the research tools provided by the Library of Congress on their web site. Linked to the site is the American Memory Motion Picture Collection which contains digitized motion pictureclips from a variety of historical periods. A link is also provided to the American Memory Online Sound Recordings Collection which includes digitized music from a variety of historical periods and recordings from Vaudeville and Popular Entertainment.
 
National Arts and Disability Center
The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. The NADC is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media, and literary-arts communities. Its resource directories, annotated bibliographies, related links and conferences serve to advance artists with disabilities and accessibility to the arts. The NADC is a project of the University of California, at Los Angeles (UCLA), University Affiliated Program. The Detroit Institute of Arts
Considered on of the country's top three museums, this site does do justice to the extensive 60,000 works on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The clean bright pages are easy to navigate and the images are available in two viewing sizes.Current exhibits are not readily available, but past exhibits do have a strong presence. There is a large number of exhibitions available for viewing. Ranging from paintings, sculpture and photography to samurai weapons and Islamic calligraphy, this website is a treat to visit. Over 150 of the works are from European artists that have been overlooked by other museums. Excellent representation of the Ash Can School and Tiffany glassworks. This site is extremely user friendly.

The Library of Congress Performing Arts Reading Room
The Library of Congress Performing Arts Reading Room is an excellent starting point when searching for collections of materials for the performing arts housed at the Library of Congress. The most extensive collections are in the area of music, with dance and theatre collections being less extensive. The music collection spans 800 years of western music history and has limited but excellent on line images. A search of the collections can be conducted. In 1999 Very Special Arts changed its name to VSA Arts. Broadway on Tour
Broadway on Tour was founded by Daniel Halkyard in 1989 in Placentia, California, to provide a place for kids who wanted to perform on stage to learn in a professional manner. BOT has a long term agreement with the historic Ebell Theater in Santa Ana, California to produce one and two hour musical matinee performances featuring characters and stories recognizable by kids from ages three to ten. Shows are performed by kids aged eight to eighteen, with auditions open to the public. In addition to the performances at the Ebell Theatre a touring group can be booked for community events. Brown Bag Players
Brown Bag Players, a professional adult actors' outreach program, is a division of Children's Theatre Workshop founded in 1994 to present audience participatory plays, performed by professional actors to children of Orange County. California Musical Theatre

Children's Fairyland
Children's Fairyland is a 10 acre park, located in the center of downtown Oakland. Children's literature is "brought to life" through fairy tale exhibits, animals, The Storybook Puppet Theatre and the Children's Theatre performances. The Storybook Puppet theatre, in the shape of an open book, has hosted America's foremost puppeteers such as Frank Oz and Tony Urbano. Performances designed around fairy tale themes dazzle the youngsters three times per day every day the park is open.

Annenberg/CPB's CINEMA: How are Hollywood Films Made provides historical facts and learning activities that help students and teachers to explore the process of filmmaking. Donald Pippin's Pocket Opera
Pocket Opera presents professional performances of operatic works in intimate, intelligible productions at affordable prices. Artistic Director, Donald Pippin's approach to opera is to tell the story in the clearest manner possible. Pippin brings the story to life via his nationally recognized English versions of opera libretti, in which he translates the spirit of the work rather than word by word, with complete fidelity to the composer's musical intentions. Pocket Opera is a theatre of the mind and of the heart. Productions are staged with minimal costuming and without sets, using only the few practical props that are essential to convey the story. The Pocket Philharmonic, a chamber orchestra of eight to fifteen musicians, led by Donald Pippin from the piano, accompanies pocket Opera performances. This is the website for The ImprovOlympic. It contains classes and show information. It is run under the guidance of Charna Halpern and the late Del Close, has been training performers in the art of long-form improvisation for the past 20 years. Teams of 8 to 10 players take the stage, ask the audience for one suggestion and create a hilarious, spontaneous, and sometimes touching, 35 minute performance of interweaving scenes and group games. Laguna Playhouse
The Laguna Playhouse was founded in 1920, when a group of Laguna Beach citizens met in a living room to establish a local theatre. In 1969, the Moulton Theatre opened on Laguna Canyon Road. In 1987, the Playhouse won a national amateur theatre competition for its production of the musical Quilters, which went on to win second prize in that year's international competition in Ireland. Its continued growth, expansion, artistic excellence, audience popularity and critical acclaim have helped make it one of Southern California's most important nonprofit theatre companies. Music Center Arts and Education
The Education Division of the Music Center is one of the nation's foremost providers of arts-education services. The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) is the national information dissemination, technical assistance and referral center specializing in the field of arts and disability. National Theatre of the Deaf
The National Theatre of the Deaf is an artistic haven for performing artists using American Sign Language where they can discover, develop, and enhance their talent. NTD is the premiere theatre company for the Deaf artist, creating professional performing opportunities at first class levels across the country and around the world. NTD Professional Theatre School (PTS) is the only professional theatre-training program for deaf people in American. The PTS Jr program is for talented deaf high school students. The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, founded in 1963, is the longest running children's theater in Los Angeles. Triple Espresso-San Diego Production
Triple Espresso is a comedy that appeals across the generations. Triple Espresso originated in Minneapolis in 1996 and has now played for over 120 weeks in multiple runs over five years. The San Diego production opened in 1997, and is now into its 5th year. In addition, Triple Espresso has played in cities across the country including Chicago, Seattle, Providence, Sarasota and Springfield, MA. The San Diego production is at the Horton Grand Theatre. Volcano Theatre Company
The Volcano Theatre Company is located in historic Volcano, California in Amador County. The city of Volcano holds many “firsts” in the state, including the state’s first amateur theatre company. The Cobblestone Theatre, home to the company, was built in 1856, and the structure was used in many capacities before becoming a theatre. Over the years, the Company has improved the facilities of the little Cobblestone Theatre, and acquired the property across the street for an amphitheatre used for summer productions. West Bay Opera
West Bay Opera provides audiences with three productions per season, one each in October, February, and May. The repertoire includes standard popular works, lesser-known operas and operettas, and occasionally operas by modern Comic operas are performed in English translations, some expressly prepared for West Bay Opera. Dramatic operas are performed in the original language. All productions are accompanied by projected subtitles. Season subscriptions are available. West Bay Opera encourages the attendance of young audiences, seniors, and those on limited incomes by offering tickets at reduced prices. American Film Institute
The American Film Institute (AFI) is the nation's preeminent arts organization dedicated to advancing and preserving the art of the moving image. Since 1967, AFI has served as America's voice for film, television, video, and the digital arts, with innovative programs in education, training, exhibition, preservation, and new technology. The American Film Institute offers advanced film studies through their MFA program in cinematography, directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting. Bilingual Foundation of the Arts
Bilingual Foundation of the Arts is a non-profit theater company, and the only full-time, professional bilingual theatre company on the West Coast. The Theatre-In-Education Program provides educational, theatrical presentations that engender self-esteem, as well as inter-cultural awareness and understanding among young children. In addition "Theatre for Youth/Teatro para Los Juvenes" is a program that stimulates a forum for students' response to issues facing adolescents in today's world. All productions come complete with curriculum guides for pre- and post- show class enrichment.
 
CAC - California Arts Council
The mission of the CAC is to make available and accessible quality art reflecting all of California's diverse cultures; to support the state's broad economic, educational, and social goals through the arts; to provide leadership for all levels of the arts community; and to present effective programs that add a further dimension to our cities, our schools, our jobs, and our creative spirit. Cerritos Center Performing Arts
Friends of the Cerritos Center offers programs to teachers and students free of charge. As in the past, the Friends may be able to provide transportation to and from events for students if a school is not able to do so. The Arts Academy for K-12 Teachers is a popular program with no charge, that gives participants both the practical tools and the confidence to bring the arts back into the classroom. Teachers who attend are given the opportunity to sign-up for artists-in-residence to come to their schools and lead fun, art-filled workshops for students, and are invited to attend performances and special events at the Cerritos Center as the special guests of the Friends.
 
Dell'Arte International
Dell'Arte is the American center for the exploration and development of physical performance, attracting students and audiences from all over the world, and sending productions around the region, country and globe. Their facility is located in Blue Lake, California and is home to a touring company, a full-time professional actor-creator training program, summer workshops and arts in education program. Information on the site includes: a newsletter, performances information, programs for local schools, workshops and professional actor training.
 
Kearny Street Workshop
The mission of Kearny Street Workshop is to produce and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American communities. KSW is a non-profit, community-based organization established to promote and present art that enriches and empowers Asian Pacific American (APA) communities. Kearny Street Workshop is based in San Francisco. Kearny Street Workshop's current programs include literary publications and readings, classes and workshops, history and culture-based presentations, and emerging artists programs. KSW-Next presents an annual festival that features the work of over 100 young Asian Pacific American artists each year. La Jolla Playhouse
The La Jolla Playhouse has earned its place in international theatre. Los Angeles Opera Community Programs
Los Angeles Opera invites everyone, from students to seniors, to make a journey of discovery into this most exciting art form! Los Angeles Opera's Department of Education and Community Programs has served over 600,000 people since its inception in 1986. Students enjoy matinee performances free of charge, in-school residencies, opera clubs and an opera camp. Teachers can attend in-service teacher training and recital programs. Senior Citizens associated with city or county-funded senior centers can attend free dress rehearsals at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Music Center Arts and Education
The Education Division of the Music Center is one of the nation's foremost providers of arts-education services. Established in 1979 to provide opportunities for lifelong learning in the arts and to enrich education of all children by bringing the arts into the classroom. The Education Division has touched the lives of more than 12 million students and teachers throughout Southern California. It currently offers 15 in-depth programs, including Center On Tour, and provides nearly 13,000 performances annually.
 
Opera Pacific-Opera Education
Opera Pacific's mainstage productions, extensive community outreach programs, and energetic Guild Alliance combine to create a dynamic cultural resource for all of Southern California. Spectra Arts in Education Program
The SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is the winner of the Governor's Award for excellence in arts in education. The program provides over 200 visual, performing and literary arts offerings including: workshops, residencies, performances and Young at Art family fun days to over 27,000 Santa Cruz County public K-8 classrooms. The goal of the Cultural Council's SPECTRA Arts in Education Program is to assist schools in improving the quality of education through offering quality arts programs.
 
The New Conservatory Theatre Center
The New Conservatory Theatre Center of San Francisco, established in 1981, is a professional theatre arts school and performing arts complex. The Theatre Arts School programs enhance the creative, social, and intellectual development of our students ages 6-17. The Theatre Center is dedicated to the presentation and production of quality arts entertainment for diverse audiences of all ages. Vector Theater Company
The Vector Theater Company is located in San Rafael, California.
